Overview

Altis is the main island of the Republic of Altis and Stratis and serves as the primary setting for many major events in ArmA 3. In the official setting, Altis is a large Mediterranean island terrain measuring roughly 270 square kilometers, featuring rocky and corrugated ground, long coastlines, multiple bays, inland saltwater lakes, and a mix of dense urban centers, rural villages, hills, and remote wilderness.

The island is commonly divided into five broad regions: East, South-East, Central, West, and South-West. Pyrgos serves as both the regional center of the south-east and the national capital. Altis contains forty-nine settlements in total, including twenty-two major cities, along with numerous military sites, outposts, chapels, and transportation corridors that make the island strategically significant.

Geographically, Altis is notable for its extensive coastline, the Gulf of Pyrgos that cuts into the island’s center, several inland saltwater basins, and elevated terrain such as Thronos in the northwest. The island’s varied landscape allows for everything from conventional mechanized warfare in the plains to insurgent and asymmetric operations in the hills and smaller settlements.

War is Hell Lore

Within the War is Hell setting, Altis is more than a Mediterranean island nation. It is a geopolitical fault line.

As the Republic entered the 2020s under severe economic strain, Altis became increasingly vulnerable to outside influence, internal fragmentation, and resource-driven competition. Its geography made it valuable already, but the discovery of the Poseidon Reserve and other offshore energy resources transformed the island into a strategic prize.

Pyrgos remains the political heart of the island, but control of Altis is not defined by the capital alone. The island’s road networks, coastal access points, outlying villages, and airfields have become critical nodes in the struggle for control. The western highlands and isolated communities provide ideal terrain for irregular warfare, while the southern and central corridors serve as key logistical and operational routes.

This became especially clear after the Destruction of the Northern Radar Installation, when AAF units were pushed into northwestern Altis to conduct sweep operations against suspected opposition fighters. The region’s broken ground, uneven sight lines, and isolated routes made it one of the earliest rural battle zones of The Poseidon Crisis, favoring concealment, ambush, and temporary insurgent camps over easy state control.

That geographic importance became even more pronounced once the crisis broadened beyond insurgency alone. Towns, roads, transformer sites, and especially airfields were no longer merely local infrastructure. They became strategic nodes inside a struggle over mobility, state control, and foreign access to the island. The operation around Molos and the subsequent appearance of Turkish forces at Molos Airfield showed how quickly local terrain and infrastructure on Altis could become tied to wider regional power competition.

As tensions escalate, Altis shifts from a fragile state under severe internal strain into an active battleground of influence between local factions, foreign powers, and armed movements seeking to shape its future. Competing interests converge on the island, each attempting to secure strategic positions, infrastructure, and political leverage.

In War is Hell, Altis is not simply the backdrop of conflict. It is one of its primary causes. The island’s resources, geography, and instability ensure that whoever controls Altis holds a decisive advantage in the broader regional struggle.

Strategic Role

Altis is the principal island of the Republic of Altis and Stratis, with Pyrgos as its capital and political center. Its forty-nine settlements, five major regions, long coastlines, transport corridors, airfields, and access to offshore energy resources make it the core battleground of The Poseidon Crisis.
